Australian Anti-Bases response to the
US bombing in Iran

Media statement
22nd June 2025

We condemn the unprovoked US bombing of Iran which occurred despite evidence that Iran did not have nuclear weapons and did not intend to acquire them.  These actions are moves of a US administration indulging fantasies that complex problems can be solved by bombs and massive violence.  Instead, they are contributing to the already massive toll of death, injury, rubble and misery throughout the region.

The Anti-Bases campaign recognises without apology that Israel is wholly to blame for disaster that is striking the Middle East now.  Israel’s continued campaign of genocide against people of Gaza and the complicity of the West has emboldened Israel to attack neighbours.  Iran has campaigned for the protection of the Palestinian people while many countries of the world have avoided that responsibility including Australia.

We call on the Australian Government to act decisively and call for de-escalation by all sides.  We call on the Australian Government not to follow a Zionist line or US line that Iran is to blame.  We call on Australia to show to the world that it is not complicit in today’s dastardly act by the US by immediately declaring that the Australia will not be involved in any role in the attack on Iran.

To do this Australia must immediately:

  1. Refuse all requests for ADF elements in any shape or form to assist in the attack on Iran.
  2. All personnel at the US Bases of Pine Gap and Exmouth both US and Australian be stood down for the duration of the conflict and all power switched off.
  3. NO access to ADF bases be allowed to US forces during the duration of the conflict.
  4. Cancel Talisman Sabre 25 – a huge military exercise at this time would be just provocative. Due to start next month.
  5. Australia must maintain a strict neutral position on this conflict and keep urging all sides to cease fire and negotiate.

The Australian Anti-Bases campaign recognises that Australia is so deeply embedded in the US military strategy that it will not readily accede to the above demands and so it calls on people in Australia of good will unite to fight this rush to an ever-widening conflict.

We call on all to join in the peace movement campaigns against US bases, for Palestine, and for peace.  We call on Australian civil society to organise massive demonstrations against the disastrous actions of Israel and the US.
